Edison Fields

I remember when the only open space I could find
were the field of grass beneath the Edison lines
When the water moved too fast to swim under the pier
and a notch on the wall at the end of each year

How tall I have grown
so little has changed
But all my best guesses
have been re-arranged

Taught to expect the best out of life
I notice I’d settle for it to just be alright
Taught to expect the best out of life
I notice I’d settle for it to just be alright

I have dreams of becoming alive
where the sunlight pushes my hunger aside
In a place where my tribe doesn’t own any land
for we’d broken the cancer built over the sand

How far we have walked
through a landscape so strange
While all our assumptions
have fallen away

Taught to expect the best out of life
I notice I’d settle if it could just be alright
Taught to expect the best out of life
I notice I’d settle if it could just be alright
